Nothing beats the simple things in life and the joy of hand-feeding animals at Sunflowers Animal Farm is one of them.
After driving past endless farms on my road trip to Margaret River, I couldn’t shake the urge for a dose of cute animals. Determined to find some furry friends, I turned to Google and discovered Sunflowers Animal Farm in Ludlow. It turned out to be the perfect spot for animal lovers like me, with a wide range of animals to pet and feed.

Getting to Sunflowers Animal Farm
First things first, let’s talk about how far away the animal farm is from Perth. Located near Busselton, the farm is about a two-and-a-half hour drive from the city.
Judging from its location, I would say the easiest way to get to the farm is by car. Once you’re on Bussell Highway, keep your eyes peeled for the signs, and you’ll stumble upon the charming farm along the way.
The journey is somewhat pleasant and there’s ample parking upon your arrival.
The variety of animals at Sunflowers Animal Farm
You’ll find a lot of friendly and cheeky farm animals at the farm! There were so many cute animals there that I couldn’t choose a favourite!
The website lists all the animals on there but my top three of the day would have to be: the donkeys – Chico and Timtam; Sugar the cow; and the horse duo – Connor and Peanut.
When I visited, there was a special nursery section at the front for orphaned baby animals. It was such a heartwarming experience to be able to cuddle and interact with them. You could say that I was in heaven.
On that day, I met a few adorable baby joeys, two baby goats, and two calves. If you go at 10 am or 4 pm, you can participate in bottle-feeding the baby animals.

Chico and Timtam
Without a doubt, the two donkeys – Chico and Timtam – were the highlights of my visit. Their adorable appearance combined with their hilarious personalities had me constantly chuckling at their antics.
I’m not sure if they were playfully nudging each other or breaking into what seemed like a donkey jig, but their presence was just so wholesome.

Sunflowers Animal Farm is a true happy place for animal lovers like me. The simple act of hand-feeding the animals brought about so much joy in that moment.
It’s the kind of place that reminds you that happiness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s just about sharing food with a furry friend and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Tips for visiting Sunflowers Animal Farm
Firstly, please don’t be like me and visit in the middle of a 40-degree summer day. Not only was I frying in the sun, but a lot of the animals were escaping the heat in the shade. Unfortunately for me, this included the llama and alpaca, who were not interested in leaving the shade for food at all. (I don’t blame them though, it was crazy hot that day!)
Secondly, make sure to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking around the farm on dirt paths. Also, maybe avoid wearing white shoes too if you can.
Thirdly, don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and water, as there is limited shade and the sun can be quite intense.
Final thoughts
If you’re looking for a wholesome experience during your trip down south, Sunflowers Animal Farm is a must-visit. The animals are incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere of the farm is just as welcoming and charming. I definitely left with a smile on my face, feeling grateful for the simple joy of spending time with these sweet animals.
